Hill beats out Hilinski for South Carolina QB job

Transfer Collin Hill was named South Carolina’s starting quarterback on Thursday, outdueling incumbent Ryan Hilinski in a tight competition.Hill, a native of Moore, S.C., previously played for Colorado State, and former Rams coach Mike Bobo is the Gamecocks’ new offensive coordinator. South Carolina opens the campaign on Sept. 26 against visiting Tennessee.”Collin Hill will start the game against Tennessee,” Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said in a statement. “I thought both guys had outstanding training camps. We can win with both guys, bottom line.”Obviously, there was an advantage for Collin playing for Bobo before. Schematically, there are some things that helped him.”Hilinski, a sophomore, passed for 2,357 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2019. He started 11 games after Jake Bentley sustained a season-ending foot injury in the team’s opener and set a school record by throwing 180 passes without being intercepted. But the arrival of Hill and a new offensive coordinator in the offseason changed the dynamic in the team’s quarterback room.Hill displayed ability during four seasons at Colorado State but kept getting derailed by injuries.
